Folic Acid: The Non-Negotiable Pregnancy Vitamin

If you are planning to get pregnant, there is one vitamin you need to know about before you even throw away your birth control: Folic Acid (Vitamin B9).

The Window of Development

\n\n

The neural tube is the embryonic structure that eventually develops into the baby's brain and spinal cord. It forms and closes incredibly early in pregnancy—usually within the first four weeks after conception. This is often before a woman even realizes she is pregnant.

\n\n

If the mother lacks adequate folic acid during this narrow window, the neural tube may not close properly, leading to severe birth defects like spina bifida.

Don't Wait Until You Are Pregnant

Because the development happens so early, doctors universally recommend that all women of childbearing age who are sexually active take a daily folic acid supplement (usually 400 micrograms). You cannot rely on food sources alone to guarantee you have enough stored up.

If you are actively trying to conceive or have a history of neural tube defects in your family, your doctor may recommend a Serum Folate Test to ensure your levels are optimal, and may prescribe a higher dose. Don't leave this to chance; prepare your body before you start your pregnancy journey.
